I am not a curmudgeon nor cynical; far from it.  I just want to share with you, in tongue-in-cheek style, situations I feel that are less than satisfactory in our present day life, both locally and globally.  The following editorials, and the opinions contained therein, are mine alone and I hope you take them in the light they are given...light!

Union or Marriage, just give us rights
The Wit and Tenets of Brad P. Scobey

Okay, I've taken long enough to put in my two cents worth here.  Having taught constitutional law at Fort Lauderdale College (n/k/a Metropolitan University) I, personally, hate the thought of any meddling with the U. S. Constitution whereby the rights of a certain class of persons is diminished, not strengthened.  The Amendments to the Constitution have, in all cases but one, given rights to the citizens of this fine country (I refer to prohibition which we all know was repealed).

I really don't care whether it's called a Civil Union or Marriage, my main concern is in basic human rights.  With the extremist conservative right, it has become a very passionate, hot topic these days and the wasted energy it has created, bedazzles my mind.  While there are so many more important things in life to concern ones self with, which are generally treated with apathy, what can cause such a fervor?  Is it fear or ignorance?

In the concepts of our modern world, to be married means that two people decided that they care so much for each other that they have committed their lives monogamously and to exclusion of all others.  That is the underlining principle of marriage.  The folks on the right have narrowed it down for us even further to mean the commitment between a man and a woman.   Thank you for your clarification.

Those who stand behind the bible and proselytize that a "gay marriage" will erode the family unit, let me tell you what erodes the family unit...D I V O R C E!  Approximately 50% of heterosexual people take the "sacred" commitment of marriage and throw it out the window in the form of divorce.  In school, 50% is a failing grade.  Having children growing up in a household where love does not flourish erodes the family.  Maybe gay couples have become a scape-goat for the shortcomings of failed straight marriages.

With such larger, civilization eroding concerns on our planet, please don't be worried about the salvation of another's' soul or that anyone will single-handedly erode the entire institution of marriage; the first is for the individual to worry about and the latter will not happen.  Those who are worried about either of the above, let me give you a few things to really be worried about where your energies could be better utilized:

1) those living in poverty in the U.S. rose last year; and the year before
2) ten people in a foreign country will share your salary to do your job
3) we will run out of oil in 20 years
4) we have the highest fiscal deficit in the history of our country
5) through our arrogance and colonialism, some people hate us so much that they would prefer to destroy us than see us flourish

Okay, let's work on curing the list first, then...

Brad
